the other dr. zuse
discovered on neatorama’s “wonderful world of early computing”, Konrad Zuse was the creator of the first full automatic, programm controlled and freely programmable computer Z3 and also of interest the original Z1, which contained all parts of a modern computer, e.g. control unit, memory, micro sequences, floating point:
About his Z4 model, Zuse had this to say: “The rattling of the Z4 is the only interesting thing about the Zürich nightlife.” more words from Zuse can be heard in his lecture available for download by the computer history museum. Zuse also founded the first computer startup company (Zuse-Ingenieurbüro Hopferau) in 1946 with this lovely “z” logo:
still more, Zuse is also noted as an advocate of Digital philosophy being the first to propose that physics is just computation, as Jürgen Schmidhuber informs in Zuse’s Thesis: The Universe is a Computer, suggesting that the history of our universe is being computed on, say a cellular automaton. Zuse’s thesis “Rechnender Raum” (Computing Cosmos / Calculating Space) started the field of Digital physics in 1967. Today, more than three decades later, his paradigm-shifting ideas are becoming popular. He was also a painter?!?
